Our article offers two types of works that need to be read and studied. The first is the works that have a reading or reading value. The second is the works presented as an extracurricular reading list. However, the teacher has the will not only to limit students to it, but also to select and present new works of educational value. Therefore, in order to develop the artistic taste and reading skills of schoolchildren, the subject teacher should focus on extracurricular activities in daily lessons, provide continuous guidance, consider ways to implement it, and create a broad field for it. The article is based on the principles of gradual increase of students’ reading, systematic development of reading, gradual transition from simple to complex, systematization and further deepening of students’ literary and cultural knowledge, development of reading skills.
